Hi ya'll, and welcome to the very friendly, very busy, very fun cross thread. By !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I'm attempting to keep it vaguely morningish. This thread rotates among Whitenoise, Hackerspace, Groupthink, Tay, Odeck, Backtalk and Oppo. Feel free to talk about any and all things your fellow kinjaers may be interested in.

So ...
How about this whole "Internet" thing? It's kind of cool, right?
*kicks ground in front of him
I never have anything interesting to say.

Do you ever watch the pictures shows? I've heard of this new film called "Star Wars"?

This is as close as I'll get to visiting certain Gawker sites outside of io9 and Gawker Main.

Y'all, we need to start some discussion up in here.
I have nothing interesting to discuss, but I figure I'll crowdsource a food opinion. I'm an expat, and I noticed that there is horsemeat in my local market. I've never tried it, but should I? Is it good? Weird? Weird in a good way?

I have heard of the Internet.
Edit: Doh. I could swear I didn't hit the publish button twice. I'm a-gonna go get the papers, get the papers.
Edit: Well, that is befuddling. Even my edits are duplicated now. Either I broke Kinja (in which case, sorry buddy) or Kinja is trolling me.

![]() 09/04/2014 at 11:33 |

Yeah, it tastes like a cross between "regular" beef and venison. I cook it like I cook a nice steak (not that I eat horse that often), but horse meat tends to cook a bit quicker than meat from bovines. Serve with a nice sauce/gravy (anything you'd use with game should do just fine) potatoes, and other veggies.

Shiny new gadget, yay! This thing just arrived today, and I've already flown it. It's harder than people have made me believe, but I'm starting to learn and get a reasonable level of control already. Waiting till tomorrow for my next flight because I have work to do (that I am currently putting off in favor of writing this comment : ) )
Unrelated, when inserting a link in a Kinja comment on the desktop site (not the mobile one because that one doesn't support links with text that's different from the url), I see a checkbox "open in new tab". Does this checkbox have any effect? I am under the impression that all links in Kinja open in a new tab regardless of whether or not this box was checked.

Here's an example of a kickable non-living object that will give and is not bolted down yet is still apparently dangerous.

I figured out what Tay is today! This is somewhat of an accomplishment, given that I don't generally stray far from the main Gawker sites. For some reason they're impossible for me to follow, and considering there are three subblongs that end in -talk, it's easy for me to get lost. Well, that and I have a horrid sense of direction.

It is possible. This "World Wide Web" is reported to have much information about a great many things. I will have to do some more research in my local paper in order to determine if this is possible.

I fly it at the flattest, most obstacle-free, most people-free place with a non-grassy surface that I can find, which so far happens to be a school yard but I'll keep looking for better places. And I try to keep the height as low as is possible without bumping into the ground every second, but that's pretty hard too. I get why these things are crashed so frequently, even if you try to be as careful as possible the thing can easily go way higher and faster than intended and go out of control. Let's hope all of that isn't gonna happen to me...
Anyway, I've ordered a few sets of replacement propellors together with the copter itself because I know I'll crash it at some point. Also ordered a protector ring thingy that goes around the propellers, but that thing hasn't arrived yet.

Seconding the "game-like" suggestion, if it's lean I would suggest rubbing in some oil and seasonings and a quick sear. But then I like my steaks still grazing on the inside soo... Alternatively a slow casserole would also work, get some bacon in there for a bit of fat and flavour?

Ok, glad this is on Oppo today, it's car-related. (Usually I'm a TAY semi-regular.)
So, my wife's grandparents bought a '70(?) Chevelle SS new back in the day, and apparently, it was Joy's (grandma's) car. But when Grandma Joy passed away, my wife's grandfather sold off the car in his grief. I don't have all the details (there used to be a website, but we can't find it, alas), but eventually, my wife's uncle was able to track it down again and buy it and bring it back into the family, and restore it and everything. Here it is at our wedding reception: http://www.knepperphotography.com/Weddings/recen…
Alas, I don't drive stick, and couldn't take her uncle up on his offer of taking it out for a spin. But he fired that baby up, and it sounded glorious - apparently had the attention of all the bikers at the bar next to our reception hall :P
Anyway, when I was trying the other week to find out just what kind of car it was, my wife and I learned from my mother-in-law that my wife's uncle has since SOLD THE CAR. And not to anyone in the family. I mean, I dunno if I could've afforded whatever he would've asked for it, but God, I would've loved to have had a look into it. So very disappointing. (To be fair, apparently they were having some financial troubles, and selling the car was one of the easier ways to get some needed money in, but still, man, it's killing me!)

Good idea! I have made a delicious stew with tougher cuts of beef, so I'm sure it would work just as well with horse!

Football starts tonight. Fantasy football drafts happened the past two days. I'm looking forward to the start of the season.

I've tried horse meat sashimi in Japan a couple times, it's not bad, but it's not any better than beef, so I'd rather just eat that, because even though they're both animals, I don't think of horse as a food source animal like I do with cows or chickens.
![]() 09/04/2014 at 13:12 |
|
I've tried that too but didn't find it any better tasting than beef sashimi, so all things being equal, I'd rather eat cow than horse.

I've always been more of a Southern Comfort guy myself, although now I'm hooked (by which I mean, it's my drink of choice, not saying I'm an alcoholic) on Firefly sweet tea Vodka.

It makes good jerky too. A local genius started selling "My Brittle Pony" when the horsemeat scandal hit the news here.

Oh, that would have slayed me! My family's still holding on to my dad's '69 Firebird. It's my pipe dream that at some point I can afford to have someone teach me how to get it back up and running, since I wasn't interested in learning from my (now deceased) dad when I was younger.

Those are the ways I drink it too, or sometimes just any fruit juice will do if I don't have lemonade.
![]() 09/04/2014 at 14:23 |

That's glorious. Of course options like engine size, transmission, rear end, etc will play into it's value. But to just throw a number out there if he got less than 30 grand for it he was robbed. It being a 1970 and a true matching numbers SS I'd say it should go for over 50. If it was the biggest engine (454) it could even be a 6 figure car.
![]() 09/04/2014 at 14:31 |
|
I honestly don't know any of the details, like if it was all still matching numbers, engine size, or what he got for it. But yeah.
![]() 09/04/2014 at 14:39 |

It's a sad story though. I always feel cars should be offered to family first, even if u know they don't have the cash.
That being said, maybe you should look for a less expensive muscle car that has an Auto trans? I don't know if it's something you'd be interested in or not, it may have only been interesting to you because of the family connection.
Example of what you can get for very cheap (this cost me $2,500 3 years ago and I drove it home). This is my 1968 Mercury Montego MX (there just so happens to be a chevelle in the background, I hope that's not salt in the wound):

![]() 09/04/2014 at 14:58 |

Yeah, it was more about the family connection, really. I mean, it could be fun, but extra money for that kind of thing is not really available for me right now, so....
![]() 09/04/2014 at 15:01 |
|
I like lemonade because it's a hard Arnold Palmer. Haven't tried it with other juices yet.
![]() 09/04/2014 at 15:01 |

yea unfortunately it's not available for me either, that's why I haven't done a whole lot to it in 3 years. I've only put about $400 (including regular maintenance) into it. It'll be great to work on with my son when he gets a bit older though.

Are you cooking yourself or is someone else?
Also, if you're cooking and eating on your own and part of your dinner is supposed to be eaten cold/raw, you can already start eating that while cooking the rest. But I'm probably too late with that advice.
![]() 09/04/2014 at 15:37 |
|
Here's what you have to know:
A car is a thing on three or more (usually 4) wheels that typically (but not necessarily) shelters it's driver, runs off whatever non-human power source it runs off and can go way faster than the average cyclist.
If you already knew all that, you do not know nothing about cars : P

It was just me, for me, and it was all in the oven together. But I have stuffed my fat little face now :) I'm really bad for accidentally eating one of the main ingredients of a dish while I wait for another ingredient to become ready.
